On Saturday, October 19th, Southwest hosted its first-ever junior 6v6 volleyball tournament, bringing together four enthusiastic clubs to launch this new format in the region. Clubs from RWB, Cardiff Celts, Ivybridge, and Bristol VC participated, with seven girls’ teams and three boys’ teams competing over the course of five hours.
The tournament provided a much-needed entry-level 6v6 competition for young players, free from restrictive age-group categories, which are typical in other regional competitions. With junior players also stepping in as officials, the level of play was outstanding, and the atmosphere was lively. More than 70 young athletes joined to enjoy the sport, meet peers from other clubs, and gain valuable match experience.
The event featured a mix of teams, including two U15 girls’ teams, two U18 girls’ teams, and one boys’ team. While the boys' team - many of whom only began playing in September - were the least experienced in the tournament, they showed resilience, keeping up the energy and giving their opponents a strong challenge.
In the end, our U15 Girls A team claimed first place, with Ivybridge taking a close second, and the Celts finishing third. All three top teams only dropped a single set each, with final standings determined by points. Our remaining girls’ teams rounded out the day in 5th, 6th, and 7th place.
Encouraged by the success of this event, we look forward to hosting another tournament in December, with more planned in the new year. It was a memorable day for the players and a historic moment for our club as we established the first junior 6v6 tournament in the Southwest—a fantastic step forward for youth volleyball in the region.
