What’s my Level – Self-Assessment Guide

As a reference, we have created a self-assessment guide to help you decide which team better fits your level.

*Please note that this is just a guide and all players are subject to try-outs before being accepted into any team. More information on try-outs below.

Try-outs Information

Any player looking to attend our training sessions will have to first attend a try-out. Try-outs are how our coaches will assess your volleyball level and experience to place you in the team they feel will best fit you.

This year, we are going to have 3 weeks of try-outs, where coaches will assess players both individually and in team / game situations.

Important dates

-   Try-outs to start on the week of the 12th August.

-   Try-outs to end on the 30th August.

-   Team invites to be sent out to players on the 3th September.

-    Player acceptance until the 6th September.

-    Training sessions to start on the week commencing on the 9th September.

Try-outs Format & Schedule

*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, this schedule might be subject to changes.

Week 1 – 12th to 16th August – Back to Volleyball:

o   Intention: This week will be divided into general advanced, intermediate and improver sessions. This will be the week for people to re-familiarise themselves with indoor after summer, but the sessions will still count as try-outs.

You are welcome to attend more than one try-out session on Week 1, however, if we reach the maximum number of players on the session, we will prioritise people that have not yet attended a session.

-   Week 2 – 19th to 24th August – Team Try-outs:

o   Intention: This week will be divided into the different teams we have, with the sessions and drills to be more focused on the specific team level.

On Week 2 we ask players to attend one training session only, if you attend a try-out that does not fit your level, you will still be offered a place in a team that better fits your level.

-    Week 3 – 26th to 31st August – Final Selections:

o   Intention: This week’s intention will be to polish team placement decisions and to give the opportunity for people who were unable to attend Week 1 and Week 2 – this week will be by invite only.

Please refer to the above Self-Assessment Guide to determine which try-outs session you should attend. If you can’t make it to Week 1 or Week 2 please message us so we can invite you for week 3.

Important information

-    Try-out fee: £6 for each try-out session you attend.

-    Each try-out session will have a maximum of 16 players attending.

-   You are welcome to attend more than one try-out session on Week 1, however, if we reach the maximum number of players on the session, we will prioritise people who have not yet attended a session. On Week 2 we ask players to attend one training session only. Week 3 will only be for people who have not had the chance to come to a try-out on Week 1 and 2 and by coaches invite only.

-     If you are unable to attend any try-out session, please email membership@bristolvc.org.uk. We cannot guarantee you a place in a team, however we will try our best to offer you a try-out with a team when the season starts.

-  Team selections are made by the coaches. We understand that the results can sometimes be disappointing, however please understand that we have many players looking to join the club and hard decisions will have to be made by the coaches. Please also understand that if you do make a team, you will not be guaranteed game time in every fixture.

-     If you are a beginner (adult or youth), you do not need to attend a try-out (more information below).

-    If you are under 18 years old you can try-out for an adult team, however, we highly recommend that you only do this if you are a very experienced player. For intermediate and experienced Youth Boys players, please attend the Under 18s try-out session.

For anyone under 18 attending any try-out session, please complete the consent form - https://forms.gle/TRFFrKt6aYCgigvMA. No youth players will be allowed to attend try-outs without a consent form.

Development and Youth Teams – Come & Have a Go Sessions

If you are a beginner (adult or youth) or a lower intermediate player, you do not need to attend a try-out. We will be running ‘Come and Have a Go’ sessions on the week commencing on the 2nd September for Youth and Adult Development players.

These sessions are a great way to get involved in Volleyball, learn or develop your skills and game knowledge. These sessions will also be a way for the coaches to decide which session (complete beginner or intermediate) you should attend. On top of everything, you’ll also be able to meet new people and get involved with the Club!

The below is the schedule for the Adult and Youth ‘Come and have a Go’ Sessions running on the first week of September only. We will then send all participants an invite email to join the club for the season. Please only attend one session this week as we have a high demand.

Youth sessions are run by qualified and DBS checked coaches, which will ensure that juniors can have fun in a safe environment.

Before attending these session,  please make sure you complete the youth consent form - https://forms.gle/TRFFrKt6aYCgigvMA.

If you have any questions regarding the Youth sessions, please contact Jeremy Harris (Lead Youth Coach & Youth Officer) on youth.bristolvc@gmail.com.

If you have any questions regarding the adult sessions, please email membership@bristolvc.org.uk.

Summer Sessions

We are still running FREE outdoor grass sessions until September. If you are interested in getting involved and are not yet part of the club, please add yourself to our Spond group, which we will use to invite you for the sessions (see above instructions). There will be sessions open to all levels.

These sessions are a great way to play volleyball, meet new people, get involved with the club and have loads of fun!
